I went out on the lake the other day for the first time since I was a little kid. We rented a paddle boat for the girls and a row boat for my husband, son and I. Looking throught the photos I got to thinking about the experience and how being on that boat was a metaphor for business and for life!
So...Do I drift...or do I row?? A little of both I think, (although, on the boat, I was a much better drifter than a rower as my kids will testify! )
The challenges of being self employed can sometimes feel like being in that boat. Alone, unprotected, vulnerable, at the mercy of nature, the wind, the weather, the waves, the world...the economy, the real estate market! If you make the wrong move you could tip over, fall in, even drown if you are not careful. But at the same time, there is a wonder, an excitement, a zeal at what's ahead! The opportunities, possibilities, connections, directions...all endless.
We had to decide which way to go on the lake. To the left, to the right, straight ahead...and once we decided, we had to row, to the left, to the right, straight ahead to get where we wanted to go. Drifting was nice at times but we had to row in order to move in the right direction to reach our goal.
What are your goals? Which direction are you headed and how will you get there? Like I said...drifting is nice at times, but will always bring you back to shore. If you have dreams of greater things...you better get rowing!!
